Seoul Photo 2009 will be held from April 8, 2009 at COEX, Seoul. Seoul Photo Fair was pre-opened on April, 2008 and it was the first time for Asia to open the gate of the professional photo fair. Since 4 to 5 years ago, photos got down to be transacted in the art market and it is the trend to place a great deal of photos in the art market now. It is way too late for Asia just starting the photo fair now compared with internationally well known photo fairs such as Paris Photo which is holding their 12th fair this year, and Miami Fair in the USA. Asian photographers are becoming well known internationally, but there was no market to manage and carry out their works of art. Beijing and Tokyo is now preparing for the photo fair upon the heels of Seoul Photo.


Seoul is known as the competitive field of the world’s IT machinery and tools for long time. Currently, all the new IT products are pre-tested in Seoul. As the field of photograph is turning to the digital system, Seoul became one of the fastest growing markets of the professional camera. It is proved well by the statistics that 1/5 of the population of Seoul possess the professional camera. The photograph market is growing fast due to a sudden increase of the population of camera possessed and a sudden interest on photograph. Since the boundary between the digital era and the original era is breaking down, photograph is now taking notice as a new favorable field in the modern art. Perhaps it is a natural result to start up the photograph fair in Korea where the consumption power of camera is strong. COEX, the center of Seoul, also took an important role of spot since the large scaled art fair like KIAF (Korea International Art Fair) was successfully held in there. Beside the art fair, most of the events held in COEX, Seoul gives an idea of capital flow.

Photographs are still under evaluated comparing to paintings, thus it’s the biggest charm that photographs are still low priced. Except the special occasion, even the popular photographers’ works are transacted by much lower price than paintings. Moreover, photograph is forecasted to become the best blue chip which would be the most suitable item for the space of new trend in case of the buildings becoming more modernized in the future. In spite of photographs occupying the great deal of weight on the art market, there has been no photo show which deals with photographs only so far. Therefore, Seoul Photo is becoming the bridgehead which brings up the unlimited potential of the photograph market in Asia where the economical scale is getting bigger. Moreover, it is participated by galleries dealing the photographs professionally as well as the individual photographers who had participated in last year. The photograph works will be displayed by the galleries where has been selecting the important photograph works in the stream of the modern art and by the individual photographers; thus Seoul Photo will offer the unusual opportunity to enjoy the original print of many photographers.

The guest country of honor for Seoul Photo is Sweden. Swedish modern photographs are initiatively released and sold to public in Asia. There will be the introduction of about 100 photograph works of 10 representative photographers in modern photograph from Sweden, where is taking notice from the art world recently and is the center of the Northern European photographs. Participating photographers include Lars Tunbjork, Mattias Olofsson, Trinidad Carrillo, Joakim Sundkvist, Anna Claren, Emmalina Ericsson and etc. They are the photographers who are not easily come in contact with even at the exhibitions, thus there are many inquiries already about purchasing their work of photographs.
